THE NEW-OLD MORGAN PLUS FOUR IS COMING TO AMERICA—SIDE CURTAINS INTACT

British sports car marques were always plenty eccentric, but there’s no question Morgan was (and still is) the quirkiest. Here’s a company, founded in 1910, that still builds cars with wood-framed bodies (a popular technique from the 1930s), as well as three-wheeled cars that closely resemble vehicles Morgan featured in the 1920s. These cars still have side curtains, many decades after other companies abandoned them for roll-up windows.

Order a Morgan and be prepared to wait—six to 12 months is standard, though the delay could be longer. The company only builds 850 cars a year in Malvern, England, and employs 220, staying solvent for 114 years—outlasting much more mainstream brands such as MG and Triumph.

The only Morgan sold in the U.S. now is the three-wheeled Super 3 (around US$54,000), but Morgan is planning to introduce a new model stateside to be sold at the company’s network of 14 dealers. Well, it’s a new-old model. It’s the Morgan Plus Four, introduced in 2020 but strongly evoking the Plus Four that first saw the light of day in 1950. Despite the vintage styling, the 2025 version of the car has many modern touches, including a bonded aluminum chassis, all-independent steering, and a turbocharged BMW inline four-cylinder engine that with a six-speed manual produces 255 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque.

The manual version can reach 62 miles per hour in 5.2 seconds, and attain 149 mph. Choose the eight-speed automatic and the horsepower stays the same but torque advances to 295 pound-feet, and the zero to 60 mph time drops to 4.8 seconds.

“We don’t have a timetable [for U.S. sales of the Plus Four] as yet,” says James Gilbert, Morgan’s publicity head. “All we can say at this moment is that we’re in the advanced stages of a [legalizing for the American market] homologation process that has been ongoing for several years. The entry that we’re confident of getting Plus Four homologated under is the ‘Replica Car Bill.’ It permits vehicles that are ‘replicas’ of one 25 years or older the chance to gain entry, subject to a number of other requirements. The Plus Four fits the brief for this, as it can be traced back to older models, both in style and model name. We look forward to sharing positive news very soon.”

The Plus Four is a Morgan you can order with USB ports, power door locks, airbags, and air-conditioning. Its current blend of new and old is “informed by over 70 years of evolution,” according to the Morgan website.“The importance and responsibility when evolving this long-standing nameplate is not lost on the team at [the factory] Pickersleigh Road,” CEO Massimo Fumarola said in a statement.

The 2024 Plus Four sells for £62,500 (US$77,020) in Britain. The American price hasn’t yet been set.
